Pros:Michael Keaton as Batman. Jack Nicholson as Joker. The score.
Cons:Comic fans will be annoyed at a change in the origin story. Not really a lot of Batman. The romance.
Gotham is not a good place to live. Crime and corruption runs rampant and now, there's this guy rumored to go around dressed as a bat.
I'm going to guess that most of you have already seen The Dark Knight. If you loved that movie, then you should probably skip this one because it's is unlikely to compare in your mind. Also, if you're a die-hard fan of the comics, you probably won't like a key change they made to Batman's origin story. His parents still die, but the killer isn't Joe Chill. And Batman doesn't have a no-kill rule this time.
But maybe you're not a fan of the comics or The Dark Knight. Maybe you just don't care whether or not it compares to either. You just want to see a Batman movie. So what makes this one special? What makes it worth watching?
First, there's Jack Nicholson as the Joker. He might not be Heath Ledger, but dang is he creepy. He is arguably the best thing about it. Second, we have Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
The first part of the film isn't really about Batman. It's about crime and reporters. In fact, we get very little Batman until halfway through. And the romance could have been handled better. The two have barely met and they're treating their relationship like they're wildly in love.
Overall, if you like Batman and don't care about how faithful the movie is to its source material, consider this.
Sex:Bruce and Vicki have dinner, kiss, and are shown (clothed) in bed together the next morning. A man says "Hello, legs" when he sees Vicki resting her feet on her desk. He tells her if he's going to pose nude, she'll need a long lens. He asks "Vale, will you marry me?" She says she won't, but she might buy him lunch. Knox says Wayne probably gives charity balls just to get women. When Alfred feels Vicky should stick around, Bruce wonders "Why don't you marry her?", not exactly what Alfred had in mind. When Bruce tries to tell her he's Batman, he accidentally makes it sound like he's married.
A nude painting of a woman appears in the background of one scene (boob nudity, but no genitals). Joker goes through photos of models, calling them crap.
Jack has an affair with his boss's mistress. He later gets a thing for Vicki, trying to woo her throughout. He at one point forces her to dance with him and kisses her arm. She distracts him by doing the same to him.
Violence:Joker electrocutes a man, leaving a charred corpse behind. He also shoots someone in a playful manner while carnival music plays and shoots an underling when he's upset. Additionally, he and his gang flood a restaurant with toxic gas, vandalize artwork, kill women with tainted makeup, and battle Batman in a cathedral. A man falls into a pool of toxic waste. Cars crash, as does an aircraft. A building explodes.
Several people fall to their presumed deaths. Once, the body is shown afterwards. People get shot. A bullet ricochets and injures a man, bloodying his face. There's a flashback of the Waynes' murder. Batman beats up criminals and reportedly kills a few. A man is stabbed in the neck with a pen. A woman throws herself out a window (offscreen) after her boyfriend tortures and disfigures her. He makes a threat about ripping people's lungs out and shoots acid at a woman.
A man gets back-alley plastic surgery. A woman laughs uncontrollably and falls over dead. Bruce breaks a vase and gets shot. A family is mugged, the father knocked out, and the kid threatened. Vicky photographed some pictures during a revolution.
Drugs & Alcohol:Joker uses a poison that gives his victims grins like his. People drink and smoke. Someone tells Wayne they need to open more champagne. Vicki acts a little tipsy. Thugs who had an encounter with Batman are assumed to have been drinking Drano.
Language:"G*d", "Chr**t", "J*sus", "s**t", "d**k", "h*ll", "b**ch", "bas**rd", "crap", and "g*dd**n".
Spiritual:There's a battle inside an abandoned cathedral. The Batman is thought to be supernatural at first. A man says he has been dead and it's liberating if one thinks of it as therapy. Joker asks a man he shoots if he has ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight.
So how did you like it?
